Marathon Moments - "Thoughts on an extraordinary year"

by John Govoni

It was not too long ago that many of you might remember my greatest supporter cheering every one on at vanous races in the greater Parkway area. Then, just 2 1/2 years ago something unusual happened, and the next thing we knew Dorothy was out there on the roads. Secretly by herself at first, she took up the challenge she set for herself and decided to become a runner.

It was tough at first, a lot of agonizing over how slow she was, how tough ft was to both breath and run at the same time (an absolute necessity), always asking when would she get faster.

Well, this past month, Dorothy Giarla completed her first Boston, with the help of Julie 0, Eavan and Kay in 4:39. In doing this, she knocked 19 minutes off our New Zealand time, run only ....3 1/2 months earlier, and over an hour!!! off her first Marathon in Pittsburgh less than one year ago.

This is a truly extraordinary accomplishment for which she should be very proud. Three marathons in one year and each one faster than the previous one. All of them run under difficult circumstances of heat, travel, and/or cold.

Congratulations, Dorothy you are the runner of the century in my life, and I thank you for giving me the opportunity to run along with you and share in each of these marathon moments.
