I was just thinking…

By Christopher Sargent

Never underestimate the inaccuracy of your car’s odometer.

Are you traumatized by the inability to accurately measure the mileage in a rotary? Or even worse, a one way street?

A track does not lie.

Will I ever be as fast as Brian Savage?

As tenacious as Jon Connor?

As laid back as Joe Green?

As enthusiastic as Walter Burgess?

To this day, I still love the aroma from a freshly lit cigarette.

Come to think of it, I haven’t had an asthma attack in quite a while.

Why do some PRC runners on Mt. Vernon St. lumber along right up the middle of the thoroughfare, completely ignoring cars trying to pass – do we own this road?

When the Centre St. resurfacing project is complete, do you think we’ll be able to run faster and jump higher?

The good news: I’m no longer a slave to a running watch.

The bad news: I’m now a slave to a heart rate monitor.

The good news: It has taught me how much to slow down for my easy runs, and I feel the improvement already.

The bad news: I feel a little uneasy about my knowledge of topics such as lactate threshold, VO2 max, oxygen debt, and what it feels like to run at 95% of maximum heart rate.

Are we lemmings? Why do we continue to subject ourselves to Mt. Vernon St.?

I care less and less these days about how many miles we ran as opposed to how we felt.

Do you think a book club would survive among the men in the running club?

Always remember: a person racing at 9:45 pace is running just as hard as a person racing at 6:45 pace – not as fast, but just as hard.

You have to respect that.

If there was a road race, and Steve Borbee didn’t compete, is it really a road race?

Does Will enjoy running with us, or is he just "doing it for the team"?

Have you ever wondered what John Govoni would look like if he shaved his beard?

Or what John Mulkern would look like if he grew one?

What’s up with all the Johns and Julies in the club?

I think we need more Rubens.

What is it about Mt. Vernon St. that keeps us coming back?

When meeting a new runner at the club, remember what it was like for you when you first ran with us.

I could never remember his name; now I’ll never forget it.

Lenny.

One night, I logged on to www.parkwayrunning.org and noticed I was the 300th person to visit the site.

I’ve probably visited the site 300 times.

I have issues.

Have I mentioned Mt. Vernon St.?

When was the last time anyone ran Bellevue Hill?

I think Alex Narinski worked for the KGB.

Sold out at $47 a pop: the planners of the B.A.A. Half Marathon certainly knew what the market would bear when there was a willing seller and a willing buyer, not to mention a beautiful course.

Caveat emptor.

The Chicago Marathon -- how far is that one? Is it as long as the Philadelphia Marathon? The Boston Marathon?

Remember: you don’t run 26 miles, you run 1 mile; 26 times.

Have you noticed? We’ve been running for years with a lot of the same people and in most cases we have absolutely no idea what these people do for a living, and we couldn’t care less.

That’s refreshing.

Memo from Tom Wall: stop all the marathon training; try racing for a change.

By the way, I’m finished with Mt. Vernon St.
