WALTER BURGESS SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Running's Everyman, A tribute to a runner who made the sport better, By Don Allison
How to Apply:

Criteria for Running Scholarship Applications

· a short note from the student demonstrating interest in running and participating in the camp

· a solid academic record

· facts about his/her running career (meaning interest, and love of the sport, not necessarily the

  best and fastest)

· financial need

· community service

Applications can be directed to Dorothy Giarla and donations can be made out to PRC/Walter Burgess Scholarship Fund and sent to Julie O'Connor, the fund administrator (applications and donations can be sent to Dorothy or Julie at: Parkway Running Club, c/o the West Roxbury YMCA, 15 Bellevue Street, West Roxbury, MA 02132). All donations are greatly appreciated!

The Walter Burgess Scholarship Recipients

The PRC scholarship in Walter’s name has been quite successful this year, both in amassing funds and in supporting a number of deserving young runners by sending them to the Newport Running Camp. Thank you for making this possible! This years recipients are:

1. Cedar Crest College coaches, Val and Dan Donohue, recommended Katie Brown. Katie strives at all times to put maximum effort into any task she is given. She was awarded Second Team All-Conference honors last fall. She competes annually in the Women's 5K Classic, a women-only breast cancer walk/run benefit which is the largest event of its kind in Pennsylvania. Last year, she finished 20th out of 884 runners, and 4th in her age group.

Katie is a junior majoring in Chemistry with a concentration in Forensics and a minor in Biology. She is also a leader within her community. In addition to her role as the captain of the cross-country team, she is incredibly active on campus and also with Habitat for Humanity.

Katie Brown was unable to earn money this summer because she's taking a full-time unpaid internship. She knew immediately that she would not be able to attend camp, which was especially disappointing to her since she attended last year and really got a lot out of it. However, because of Walter's scholarship, Katie is excited to be a part of camp and partake of its benefits.

2. Coach Ken Pelletier recommended Christine Andrade, who will be a Gardner Mass. high school senior in September. Christine has been running cross-country, indoor, and outdoor track for 3 years. She had attended the Newport Running Camp the summer after her freshman year and loved it. She was unable to attend last summer, and without the Walter Burgess Scholarship, she would not have been able to attend this year. Christine is looking forward to this camp experience because she feels it "is full of people who could make her a top athlete". She loves the experience of running, but also the experience of making friends with other runners - all of which she will get at the Newport Running Camp.

3. Tyler (10 years old) and Brandon (13 years old) Burgess are brothers and also are Walter's nephews. They would not have been able to attend the Newport Running Camp without this scholarship. Tyler got interested in running just before Walter died. Walter and Tyler actually ran together once or twice. Both boys were very close to Walter and still miss him very much. Walter inspired their interest in running.

In April, their mother will be getting married to Kent Vinson, who has also taken up running since Walter passed away. Kent ran the 2004 Boston Marathon in Walter's honor and expects to do it again in April. With the help of the Newport Running Camp, the boys will continue Walter's running dreams and could one day be doing the Boston Marathon themselves.

All of these recipients really appreciate the opportunity to attend the Newport Running Camp in Walter's name! Walter would be honored and amazed that so many people cared enough to contribute to his scholarship. There is no doubt he would be pleased that others could share and develop his and their love of running.

BOSTON MARATHON

"We are different, in essence, from other men. If you want to win something, run 100 meters. If you want to experience something, run a marathon."

HOW TO RECEIVE AN INVITATIONAL BOSTON MARATHON NUMBER

Each year the PRC receives a number of invitational applications for the Boston Marathon.

Members in good standing (*see below) are invited to participate in a lottery that takes place at the annual “Jon Connor, Resolution Run” on January 1.

You have an opportunity for multiple entries. Each club member is entitled to one entry for membership alone. All club officers are eligible for one additional entry. Each volunteer effort puts your name in the hat an additional time. You can also receive one additional entry by attending 3 of our 6 club membership meetings.

The Volunteer opportunities:

1. Walter's Run
2. Hopkinton Long Run support
3. Chase Corporate Challenge
4. BAA Half Marathon

For example, if you volunteer for 2 of the 4 events listed above, and attend 3 meetings your name will go in the hat 4 times (one for membership alone).

All interested should submit their names in writing to a designated club officer by December 25th, one week prior to the drawing.

Entrant names (on slips of paper) are drawn from a hat immediately following the annual “Jon Connor, Resolution Run”. You are not required to attend either the run or drawing to participate in the Marathon lottery.

A name is drawn for each invitational application and the drawing continues until an equal number of alternates are also chosen. In the event that an invitational application lottery number winner is unable to participate in the Marathon they will immediately notify a club officer. If the application has not already been submitted to the BAA it will be transferred to the first alternate or the next alternate thereafter, allowing the alternate the optimal training opportunity. After an application is submitted to the BAA it is non-transferable.

All participants are required to comply with all restrictions and conditions as determined by the BAA and PRC Board. These invitational numbers are not to be used for fundraising or any promotional purposes.

* Membership dues must be paid in full prior to the preceding years Boston Marathon as a condition of participation. For example: Membership dues must be paid by April 17, 2006 as condition for participation in the 2007 Boston Marathon Lottery.

EAT N' RUN

Anyone interested in hosting an EAT N' RUN? We are looking for volunteers. An EAT N' RUN is when a club member will host other club members at their home for a brunch after one of our Saturday morning club runs. It's a nice social event that brings club members together.

Please remember to be courteous to YMCA members when we are meeting for our runs. Many times when we meet before or after a run, we have a large group of very chatty runners! Remember that others are using the Y as well, and avoid blocking the hallway or the ramp leading to the exercise room. The exercise room is more crowded now that there are many new pieces of equipment, so please try not to monopolize the limited area available to stretch.

YMCA Discount

As a member of the PRC you are entitled to a 20% discount off a YMCA membership.

Some of the benefits of a West Roxbury YMCA Membership are:

Access to all the facilities and programs
Wide varity of fitness classes
Aquatic activities auch as lap swim and family swim
Free babysitting service while you work out
Early registration for programs

USATAF MEMBERSHIP

Just a reminder that PRC encourages all runners to start/renew their USA track and Field memberships. Why is this important? For a number of reasons:

(1) Each Year the PRC receives a number of waivers for the Boston marathon. These waivers allow runners who have not yet met their qualifying times to "bypass the system" and get an official race number. The number of waivers PRC receives can be related to the # of PRC folks who are active members in USATF. So if you want to run Boston -- or even if you merely want to help out PRC friends who want to run -- your mentership in USATF is really important'

(2) USATF membership is inexpensive, comes with cool runner benefits (e.g., a local newletter) and is a great way to support the sport we all love....

How do you join USATF? Simple. Goto USATF New England and scroll down to the bottom and click on Membership Benefits. There is a form you can fill out online. Please note, the PRC club # is 176.
