RESOLUTION RUN

The Parkway Running Club had it's annual Resolution Run on New Years Day. 49 members renewed their membership and 3 new members joined the club.
The day began with membership renewal the the gym at the YMCA. Then, at 10 am, everyone headed outside for the first PRC run of the year. After the Y we all headed back to the Y for brunch.
The highlight of the brunch was the drawing of the 5 Boston Marathon numbers the PRC gets from the B.A.A. THe day ended with some members gathering at Doyles Pub in Jamiaca Plain.
Thanks to the many voulnteers who made it possible to being the New Year with one more sucessful Resolution Run.

Membership Renewal
Thank you to everyone who has already renewed their membership. Members who joined after September 1 will be required to complete the application form but no fee will be required.
If you haven't renewed yet please print out the membership form found on this Web Site and mail it to the Y with payment. Or deposit it with your check in the PRC mailbox located at the Y.
All members who renew, see Jim Sweeney to receive a new 2003 long sleeve PRC T-shirt.

THANK YOU TOM PURCELL & WELCOME SARAH HULL and STUART ROSE

Many thanks to Tom Purcell, who is finishing his tenure on the Board after one year as Treasurer and two years as Vice President. Tom devoted much time and energy to the Club. He used his Fidelity-honed skills to put the Club on a firm financial footing and helped the club run smoothly. As a small token of our appreciation, the Club gave Tom a gift certificate to Zon's in Jamaica Plain. And even though Tom and Beth are moving "out west" we all hope we will see them back in the neighborhood often.
As we thank Tom, we also welcome Sarah Hull and Stuart Rose to the Board as Vice Presidents. They are sure to bring new ideas and lots of energy to their new positions. Be sure to let them or any Board member know if you have any suggestions or thoughts on how we can make the club an even better experience for all of our members.

PRC Officers for 2003
President: Jim Sweeney
Tri-Vice President: Erin Dunne, Stuart Rose, Sarah Hull

NOTES FROM THE CLUB PRESIDENT

Well, we have turned the page on another year, and I would have to say it was another successful year for the PRC. We logged a lot of miles, even lately when the temperature hovered near zero and we had upwards of 25 crazy people showing up to run. We ran races from 5k's to an Ironman Triathlon, and every-thing in between We may have run faster or slower than the year before, but the important thing is that we kept going, despite cranky knees, tight hamstrings or sore achilles. We ate and drank together often, whether at the Corrib, Joe Green's, Lake Winnipesaukee, North Conway, Martha's Vineyard or Eat n' Runs. Our membership p grew to over 100, with Paul "# 100 and that is NOT my age" Sutliff taking the honors. Our stops at the cemetery by Allendale stretched longer and longer while everyone chatted, to the point where some night, we may as well just brings snacks and finish the run right there.

Most importantly, we did these things together. Through ups and downs, we depend our friendships, and made new friendships with those who joined us. We did our best to make sure that those who were on their first runs with us had someone to run with and weren't left wondering part way down Weld St. just where everyone had turned. We tried to remember our first few awkward times run-ning: with the Club when we didn't know any-one and tried to make new members feel at home.

Through the Scamper, we raised nearly $3000 to buy Christmas presents for children who would otherwise go without.: We spent a lot of time volunteering for the BM Half Marathon, Francine's triathlon, the Scamper and the Corporate challenge.

Thanks to everyone for all that you did in making 2002 a successful year for the PRC, and in making the PRC an extended family for many of us.

Welcome to new members
Doris Drake, Megan Kelly, Peter Hirsch, Joe Bowers & Scott Sharek.
Congratulations to new expectant mom Angela Rose. Due Date is in July.

Boston marathon course Long Run
Hi, Hope everyone who ran on the Boston marathon course today feels good about their run. You all seemed to do well and hope your happy with your run. We picked a good day to have it. The weather was perfect

Thank you again to John Govoni, Jim Sweeney, Angela and Pam for being drivers and support along the course. Also thanks to John Donnelly, Jon Connor and Brian Savage who showed up unexpectedly at the Newton fire station and offered support and helped pick up runners. These long runs could not be held without the support from fellow club members and it is very much appreciated.

The next PRC long run on the marathon course will be on March 29, which is 3 weeks before the marathon. No need to let me know at this moment if you will participate in that run. Just giving everyone a heads up so you can plan ahead. I will send an email out before hand to see who wants to participate and who can help with support

If their are a few members who cant participate in the run on the 29th and would like to do a run on the 23rd, let me know. I am willing to offer support

Walter

Much thanks to Walter Brugess for all the support work.

Good luck to Jim S. and Walter B. at STU's 30K Tomorrow. Hope the good weather holds out!
Mike J.

Children's Hospital Kids-At-Heart Marathon team

My dear friends,

I am very fortunate to be a part of the Children's Hospital Kids-At-Heart Marathon team running in the 107th Boston Marathon next month. The cause means a great deal to me because of my own experience at Children's. A little over a decade ago, a team led by Doctors Ed Walsh and Larry Rhodes saved my life. It is a testament to the level of professionalism and quality of care that I have gone from being a gangly, red-headed pre-teen lying on a hospital bed to a gangly, red-headed post-teen attempting one of the world's most elite races.

On Saturday, March 22nd, I'll be holding a fundraiser for Children's at the West Roxbury Knights of Columbus (110 Park Street) and would love it if you could come. I would be ill-prepared for this race if not for the support and structure of PRC and would like to publicly acknowledge the great group that we have.

The event will last from 7:00 pm ? 11:00 pm and will feature Boston?s Best Disc Jockey, DJBC. Additionally, we will have complimentary hors D?ourves, door prizes, and raffles from The Home Depot, Roche Bros., The Red Sox and many others! The suggested donation is ten dollars.

For more information, please feel free to call me at 617/325.2917 or respond to this e-mail. If you would like to make a donation and cannot attend, I would appreciate any donations sent to 1385 Centre Street, Boston, MA 02131-1014. Check's should be made out to: Children's Hospital Boston.

I hope this note finds you all well and look forward to seeing you on the 22nd!

With every good wish,
Matt O'Malley

Please remember to be courteous to YMCA members when we are meeting for our runs. Many times when we meet before or after a run, we have a large group of very chatty runners! Remember that others are using the Y as well, and avoid blocking the hallway or the ramp leading to the exercise room. The exercise room is more crowded now that there are many new pieces of equipment, so please try not to monopolize the limited area available to stretch.

USATAF MEMBERSHIP

Just a reminder that PRC encourages all runners to start/renew their USA track and Field memberships. Why is this important? For a number of reasons:

(1) Every year, PRC receives a number of waivers for the Boston marathon. These waivers allow runners who have not yet met their qualifying times to "bypass the system" and get an official race number. The number of waivers PRC receives can be related to the # of PRC folks who are active members in USATF. So if you want to run Boston -- or even if you merely want to help out PRC friends who want to run -- your mentership in USATF is really important'

(2) USATF membership is cheap, comes with cool runner benefits (e.g., a local newletter) and is a great way to support the sport we all love....

How do you join USATF? Simple. Goto USATF New England and scroll down to the bottom and click on Membership Benefits. There is a form you can fill out online. Please note, the PRC club # is 176.
