LAKE WINNIPESAUKEE

Well, it's been a good run (pardon the pun), but I have come to the realization that I must share the joy. I will relinquish my duties as the jamoke who plans and organizes the PRC's annual pilgrimage to Laconia, NH to participate in the 66 mile Lake Winnipesaukee Relay. I am passing the baton, figuratively and literally, to the next person who can manage this weekend event for the PRC. You can't get rid of me, though, I'll run leg 4 slower than anyone can, and be proud to have done it.

I know there are many of you out there just chomping at the bit for this opportunity; I will enter your name into my lottery if you want. Just kidding, folks who want to run this? I have lots of information and material which makes it fairly easy to plan and manage - just make sure you give me Leg 4, cold beer, and a comfortable bed as far away from Brian Savage as possible.

If anyone is interested, let me know soon and I'll debrief you on all the bribery and scandal you can anticipate as you weave your way through demands for certain legs, elimination of hills on the course, and, of course, figuring out who gets to sleep with whom! You can really have fun with this one.

Looking forward to hearing from someone...anyone. I can always stay on as a consultant, it pays better.

Chris Sargent

Thank you

Thanks to one of PRC's great sponsors, Diane Ducharme from Yoga for You for kicking off our January Expert Speaker Series with a talk on "Yoga and Running". We all learned how Yoga can help with our stretching and injury prevention.

In February, Diane also led us through a 2 hour sweat-filled Bikram Yoga master class. Thanks to Diane and all PRC runners who participated!

THE 106TH RUNNING OF THE BOSTON MARATHON

"We are different, in essence, from other men. If you want to win something, run 100 meters. If you want to experience something, run a marathon."
--Emil Zatopek

"Running into the sun but I'm running behind."
Jackson Browne

"Always run the tangents."
Mike Jasko

HI, Here are the results of all the PRC members who ran the Boston Marathon. Congratulations to everyone for finishing the marathon under such tough conditions. I know some of you are not happy with your time, but you all should be so proud of your accomplishment.

You had to train during one of the toughest winters in New England history and then on marathon day, it is sunny and warm. Not very favorable conditions to run 26.2 miles, but you all did it and should be proud of that no matter what your time was. Now its time to sit back, relax and reflect on your accomplishment. Hope everyone's recovery goes well If I missed someone's name, please let me know.
Thanks
Walter

NOTES FROM THE CLUB PRESIDENT

Boston Marathon

Once again, we have a number of people running in the Boston Marathon on April 21st. Good luck to everyone who is running. We have a slate of activities scheduled around the Marathon.

Pre Race Party

First, we will have our pre - Marathon pasta dinner for everyone who is running a spring marathon (including those adventuresome international marathoners who are running the Ottawa Marathon on May 11.) We have reservations for Saturday evening, April 19 at 5:00 at Vinny Testa's, 1700 Beacon St. in Brookline. The restaurant is at the 23-mile mark on the course.' This is NOT the Vinny Testa's by the finish line. You will have to wait until Monday afternoon to make in to the finish line.

Marathon Bus info

Second, we have a bus out to Hopkinton again this year. The bus will leave from the Y at 7:30 a.m. on the morning of the marathon. We have to be out to Hopkinton before 9:00. The BM is very strict on this requirement, so everyone needs to be on time. The cost of the bus is $20 for Club members and $25 for non-members. Officially registered runners' only are allowed on the bus. This is also a strict requirement, of the BAA. If the requirement is violated, the Club and members of the Club may be banned from any future participation in the Boston Marathon .The buss 45 seats, so please feel free to invite other official registrants who are not Club members. We will fill up the bus on a, first - come first served basis, so please Sign up on the sheet on the Club bulletin, board at the Y or with Jim Sweeney or Walter Burgess.

Sheraton hotel room

Third, we have again reserved a room at the Sheraton on the day of the race. The cost per person is $20.00. We will have drinks, and, snacks in the room. If you would like to change or shower in the room, please bring a gym bag with your change of clothes to the Y on the morning of the marathon. We will have someone bring the bags into the Sheraton during the day so they will be in the room when you finish. Again, please sign up on the sheet on the Club bulletin board at the Y or with Jim Sweeney or Walter Burgess. By the way, there will be no Power Bars, Power Gel or Gu allowed in the room as the sight or smell of them may provoke a violent reaction from anyone, who ran the marathon.

Post Race Party

Fourth, we will return to the Dogwood in Jamaica Plain (directly across from the Forest Hills T stop) for our post - Marathon party at 6:30 p.m. on the night of the marathon. The cost per person is $5.00.The Club is subsidizing the food, drinks are on your own. Please sign up on the sheet on the Club bulletin board at the Y or with Walter.

Finally, if you are volunteering at the marathon in any way, please let the BAA. know that you are with the Parkway Running Club. The BAA. has advised us that volunteering at BAA. events will be a more important factor in the Running Club's invitational number program next year, so it is important that the BAA. knows when a Club member volunteers at a BAA. event.

Good luck to all the PRC members who will be running in the Boston Marathon on April 21 May all your hard work and training pay off and you have a great race The Boston Marathon Health & Fitness expo where you pick up your race number, will be held at the Hynes Convention Center on Saturday April 19 and Sunday, April 20 from 9 am-6 PM

HOW TO RECEIVE A PRC BOSTON MARATHON NUMBER

Traditionally PRC has a lottery for Boston Marathon numbers for club members each year. The BAA gives the club 5 invitational applications.
Club names are deawn from a hat. You have an opportunity to have your name in the hat several times.
Each volunteer event puts your name in the hat. Each club member has a name in for membership in the club.

The club has a list of events that members can volunteer for.

1. YMCA Triathlon 2. Santa Scamper 3. Tufts health Care 10K 4. Chase Corporate Challenge

also by attending 3 of our 6 club meetings

For example, if you volunteer for 2 of the 4 events listed above, and attend 3 meetings your name will go in the hat 4 times (one for membership alone).

LOOKING FOR ADVERTISERS

We are looking for advertisers for the newsletter. If you know of a business or person who could benefit by advertising in the newsletter, please encourage them to advertise with us.
The rate is $30.00 for 6 issues (1 Year) of the newsletter.

Update E-Mail
If your email/home address or phone # changes, Please let me know runwalter1@aol.com so I can keep the club list up to date

return to top

Please remember to be courteous to YMCA members when we are meeting for our runs. Many times when we meet before or after a run, we have a large group of very chatty runners! Remember that others are using the Y as well, and avoid blocking the hallway or the ramp leading to the exercise room. The exercise room is more crowded now that there are many new pieces of equipment, so please try not to monopolize the limited area available to stretch.

EAT N' RUN?

EAT N' RUN

Cindy Gillan will host an Eat n' Run on April 27 following the James Joyce Ramble in Dedham. The race starts at 11:00a.m. The first ones to finish and get over to Cindy's house get the best food! Cindy lives at 236 East Street in Dedham, on the stretch of East St., which is between Dedham center and Washington Street.

Cindy will also take up a collection of t-shirts for donation to a local charity at the Eat N' Run

This will help those less fortunate than us, and will also help you clear out the ever-growing pile of running t-shirts in your closet!

DIRECTIONS TO CINDY & MATT'S: 236 EAST ST, DEDHAM 02026

For those of you unfamiliar with Dedham, your best bet may be to use MapQuest. We are on the section of East St. which runs parallel to Washington St. behind the Halfway Cafe, but you cannot enter East St. from Washington St.

From West Roxbury, go to the "Dunkin Donuts" rotary, continue on Washington St.(see C&T paint store on Left) and basically make a big U-turn by turning left on Harris St. (just before Odessa Restaurant), under the Rt. 1 overpass, then another left at the light (Electrologist on left, old liquor store on right). There is no East St. sign, but you are now on East St. We are on the corner of East St. and Brookdale Ave. Look for a white fence and pine trees out front. Parking on East or Brookdale.

Coming from the Endicott Estate, head back toward Dedham Center on East St. Go straight at the 4-way stop, staying on East St. Follow to the traffic light and go LEFT onto High St. and then take your first RIGHT back onto East St.

If the day is as warm and sunny as marathon day was (looks unlikely according to today's reports), please bring a lawn chair. Otherwise, we will be cozy inside! Looking forward to seeing you...

Good luck to those of you who are running the race!
Cindy G.
Call 781.329.6609 if you have questions.
JAMES JOYCE RAMBLE

On line registration for the James Joyce Ramble (10K) is now being taken.
The 20th edition of the race will occur on Sunday, April 27, 2003 at the Endicott Estate in Dedham. www.ramble.org

Anyone interested in hosting an EAT N' RUN? We are looking for volunteers. An EAT N' RUN is when a club member will host other club members at their home for a brunch after one of our Saturday morning club runs. It's a nice social event that brings club members together.

Fun Run

The April 10 "Thank Goodness Winter Is Finally Over" Fun Run and Meeting.

Yes, it was a long, cold, snowy Winter. It was very difficult to get outside to run many nights. But finally, spring is here, the snow is almost gone, the days are warmer, and once again there is daylight in the evening. In order to welcome everyone back to running, including the many of us who have not gotten out to run much in the last few months or are new to the Club, we will have a fun run on Thursday evening, April 10, at the regular time, 6:40

p.m. After the fun run, we' will have snacks, pizza and drinks on the Club. If the weather is nice, we will have it outside in the park by the Y. We will also have this as our postponed March meeting. This is a good chance to reconnect with the Club and get started again on a running program.

We would like to start a PRC library. Julie O'Connor has volunteered to be the club "Librarian"

These books are now available

  1. Adventure Running ( the 100 Greatest Runs in Norths America) by Jerry Schad
  2. Strectching by Bob Anderson

USATAF MEMBERSHIP

Just a reminder that PRC encourages all runners to start/renew their USA track and Field memberships. Why is this important? For a number of reasons:

(1) Every year, PRC receives a number of waivers for the Boston marathon. These waivers allow runners who have not yet met their qualifying times to "bypass the system" and get an official race number. The number of waivers PRC receives can be related to the # of PRC folks who are active members in USATF. So if you want to run Boston -- or even if you merely want to help out PRC friends who want to run -- your mentership in USATF is really important'

(2) USATF membership is cheap, comes with cool runner benefits (e.g., a local newletter) and is a great way to support the sport we all love....

How do you join USATF? Simple. Goto USATF New England and scroll down to the bottom and click on Membership Benefits. There is a form you can fill out online. Please note, the PRC club # is 176.
