Good luck to Rob Kerwin in his upcoming Ironman Triathlon. Rob will be competing in an Ironman Triathlon (1.2 m swim, 112 m bike, 2:6.2 m run) in November in Florida. Rob has trained hard for this event and we wish him well. Have a great day and a great race!
All members are urged to meet at the "Y" (15 Bellevue Street) for training and fun runs:
Since becoming editor of this newsletter, I have enjoyed putting them together and look forward to being editor for many more issues I appreciate all the compliments on the newsletter I have got and if you have any ideas on how it can be improved or changed or any comments atall, let me know
One area I could use some help is in the reporting of race results - Everyone who runs a race should have their accomplishment recognized, but in order to do that I need to know the race results so I can include them.
For example, in this newsletter is the results of the Sugar Bowl 5 miler, but I only have results of 6 members. I know a lot more members ran that race but I can't include their results because I never got them I even sent an email asking for results but only received 2, so if you run a race and would like your accomplishment recognized, please either email me your results or leave them in the PRC mailbox at the Y. It would make my job a bit easier
If I know of a race that PRC members are doing and I don't receive results on them, I will go to Cool Running to look them up, but this can be very time consuming espacially for the big races and sometimes names are missing or I miss a name while schrooling down the list.
Members who schedules conflict with the regular runs can join Rob's (Kerwn) Renegades on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 6am at the "Y'' for an early morning run. Distances are usually 5 or 6 miles.
Our apologies if your results are not included for a particular race We have a lot of members running a lot of differant races, so we need your help by reporting your results to us.

The Parkway Running Club will get paid per volunteer, so by volunteering you will be helping out the club financially and increasing your odds of receiving a Boston Marathon number through our lottery. The Tufts 10K will be on sunday Oct 8. If intersted in volunteering contact John Donnolly, or Julie Connors
What more can you say about this race. This 7.1 mile run is probable one of the most scenic races in New England. It has great ocean views enthusiastic crowd support and a party atmosphere at the finish.
Part of the excitement of this race is the entry process itself. Ttis race fills on a first come first served basis, which requires you to mail in your app as soon as you receive it for any chance to get in. This years field was capped at 10,OOO. I have been LUCKY This is my 11 straight Falmouth so I guess working iN the POST Office has its advantages.
The weather for this race is usually hot and humid but this year we awoke race morning to sunny but cooler weather. Unlike last year, where the race was run in torrential downpours, so the cooler and dry weather was a welcome relief to all us veteran Falmouthrunners.
The start of the race is in Woods Hole in front of the Capt'n Kidds restaurant. The start is on a staggered basis. The elite runners take off first at loam. It takes i6 minutes to get every- one on their way.
The course quickly leaves Woods Hole and at mile I you pass the Noboska Lighthouse, a very scenic sight. The course then turns inland and for the next 2.5 miles it is a series of roiling hills. The best part about this part of the course is it is run along tree lined roads with lots of shade. At 3.5 miles, the course quickly flattens out and you are running along beach front property with lots of crowd stupport. The course remains flat until about the 6.5 mile mark where you take a left turn and face a steep hill. The crowd support is amazing on this hill and the enthusiasm helps you make it to the top, and once there, you can see the finishline, which has a huge American flag above it. It is a downhill finish and everyone looks good finishing no matter how bad you feel
After crossing the finish line, which I did in 49:23. and walking about a 114 mile you arrive at the ballfield, where their is plenty of food and dunks and where you can meet family and friends or fellow runners and talk about the race. This is where I met fellow PRC member Ray Gonzalez and we talked about our run while waiting in line for Ben & Jerry's ice13 cream. Ray ran a great race himself. He finished in 45:50
If you have ever thought of running Falmouth and don't want to deal with the laige crowds and warm weather, why don't you think of running Falmouth in the fall. It is the same course, but a lot less crowded. This years race is on Nov 5th
Dorothy Giarla ran her 1st marathon (Pittsburgh) 9n May 2.1999. Since this time, Dorothy has run 2 additional marathons (New Zealand and Boston) and continues to plan for filture marathons (maybe,Philadelphia).
Q. When did you start running?
A Since my husband. John Govoni, was an active member of the PRC, I hung out with the club for about 3 years as a total (underline that) non-runner. I did race support, took photos of the runners at races, and helped shuttle tile Lake Winnie Team, but I did NOT run! Then in 1997, I took to the roads myself starthig off very slowly and for very short distances I'm not sure ex-
aetly why I started runing -- maybe to lose weight (didn't happen), maybe just to stay fit
and healthier (is happening), bay just because hanging out with all these runners finally pulled me into their ranks. Once I started running. I received overwhelming encouragement from the PRC members and still do 3 years later!
Q. What motivated you to run your 1st marathon?
A It was mostly Eavan Mages idea. We were running partners on pretty much the same pace then, and she wanted to do a marathon. She actually wanted to Boston, but I thought that would be too hard. So, I came up with Pittsburgh, one John had already run and where my grandchildren lived (we needed that support along the route). In the course of our training, Eavan becaiue faster than me, but we did stay together for the first 9 miles of Pittsburgh when she pulled ahead. It was tougher than we expected, but we both finished. and managed to earn our medals albeit slower than we each had hoped. Our mantra is "beat Oprah". something we have yet to do but we are getting closer!
Q. Tell us about your marathon training schedule and what makes your training successful?
A: I am not sure I would call my training successfull, as I am still chasing the dream finish time. But, I have finished all three marathons and I have PR'd in each. So I am getting there. John helps tremendously with my training. as do my running partners from the club. We mostly follow the Runners World training schedule for the beginner. John informed me that I might have to switch to intermediate though as he thinks I am no longer a beginner. I am not sure I am ready for that!
Q. What advice can you offer to those folks who are considering a first time marathon
A. Go for it! The training takes a lot of time, not just running, but resting up after the
long runs' but it is definitely worth it. The sense of accomplishment when you- cross that finishline is amazing - every time! something you have to find out for yourself.
