PRC HOLIDAY PARTY

PRC is having a Holiday Party at the Milky Way Lounge & Lanes (403 Centre Street, JP) on Sunday, December 22nd @ 6-9pm. This is a very funky place with bowling lanes, pool tables and great pizza - the same place as last year. Hope you can make it!

The Club will pay for the bowling lanes and subsidize the tax and tip, but each member would be responsible for $16 for food (appetizers, Caesar Salad and an assortment of gourmet pizzas), plus whatever beverages consumed at the cash bar. Kids will only be $8.

Please e-mail me to let me know how many in your party. Then, you can send a check to me at 183 Beech Street, Boston, MA 02131 or leave it at the Y. We need to collect the money up front.

If you are interested, please RSVP to Dorothy Giarla
or 617-323-3831 - BEFORE NOVEMBER 21.

** CLUB ELECTIONS **

Sarah Hull & Stuart Rose were both candidates for the open Vice President spot being vacated by Tom Purcell. Membership update: The PRC continues to grow. As of Sept 30th, The PRC has 94 members

I would like to thank each and every one of you who participated in the Lake Winnipesaukee Relay this year; what a great success! Also, a special thanks to those folks who didn't run, but made great contributions to the weekend by driving the course, dropping off and picking up runners, and most importantly, enthusiastically cheering our teams as we made our way around the lake. Its quite a long day for the runners probably more so for you, so I think that I speak for the entire group when I say much appreciated!.

A special tip of the hat goes to Janice Badessa and Willie Williams. Janice not only accepted her fate as the sucker who runs the last leg, but stepped up to the plate and ran another leg in the middle of the race when we lost some team members. Willie vowed to show up at Winni no matter what, despite not even appearing on the roster of any team... a man without a leg!! He wowed us with sheer will and determination (in addition to his penchant for Advil every couple of miles) while he picked off at least 5 runners over 8 miles, absolutely nailing the pace we needed to make the 5:15 cutoff at leg 8. How appropriate it was that he passed the baton to Janice. That's teamwork. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did heres to next year!!
Cheers!
Chris

Editors note: Thank you to Kim Dooley, a coworker of Dorothy Giarla's for coming up to Lake Winnie and helping us by running one leg of the relay for one of our teams     Also great job by John Govoni, John Donnelly Cindy Gillan, Jon Connor & Chris Sargent, who were fighting injuries of some sort, but were still able to participate and complete their leg of the relay ;

Notes from the club president

SAVE THE DATE
--  The Parkway Running Club's Santa Scamper is scheduled for December 15, 2003 at 11:00, with a Kid's Race at 10:45. Please save the date. We really need all the volunteers we can use that day. We will also need quite a bit of help in organizing the race, so watch your emails and the bulletin board at the Y and please help out whenever you can. Thanks.

ELECTIONS It may be hard to believe, but another year is quickly coming to an end and it is time for elections to the PRC Board.  Nominations for any of the five Board positions (President, two Co-Vice Presidents, Secretary and Treasurer) may be made by email to Club Secretary Walter Burgess (runwalter1@aol.com) or by leaving a note in the PRC mailbox at the Y. Each of the current Board members is willing to serve again, except for Co-Vice President Tom Purcell.  Please send in any nominations by October 15. If there are any contested positions, we will have voting at the November Board meeting and for a short time thereafter.

1st Annual Mount Desert Island Marathon
Hi. I am writing to tell you about an exciting event for Marathon Runners. The 26.2 mile world class event is the 1st Annual Mount Desert Island Marathon which will be held on Sunday, 20 October 2002. The event location is on Mount Desert Island, Maine where beautiful Acadia National Park is located. Go to http://www.mdimarathon.org . I think it's going to be a great run.

Greetings from the MDI Marathon! A friend of yours, Ricardo hernandez-Pinzon sent this to you from the Mount Desert Island Marathon website. This will be a World Class Event of 26.2 miles on 20 October 2002. We would certainly enjoy having your participation. Check out the official website, http://www.mdimarathon.org, or Email us at Marathon@MDIMarathon.org for more information

BOSTON MARATHON Qualifying Times

"We are different, in essence, from other men. If you want to win something, run 100 meters. If you want to experience something, run a marathon."

Two quick things here. First, those of you who are 45+ (or planning to get there soon enough) or 55+, the BAA have an extra-special gift. 5 and 10 minutes, respectively, added to you BAA qualifying times for 2003! And 4 hours for the 60 yo crowd. Just as an example, that means a 3:45 for John Govoni and 4:15 for Dorothy. Definitely something attainable! And did you run an almost fast enough time at Bay State in Oct 2001? You might have just retroactively qualified.

With the BAA crowd getting larger each year and times getting slower everywhere, I don't agree with watering down the Boston Marathon even more than it already is. But I guess this is the new reality. The chip times are probably making this easier and the proper seeding means faster runners shouldn't be bothered so much. Wonder if they are throwing out the supposed 15,000-runner limit?

This means that in 2004 I'll only need a 3:30 instead of a 3:25. But I'm one of those guys who'd rather have the challenge of needing a 3:25 instead of a 3:30. It means more that way. I'm interested in hearing opinions of others and I'm guessing this will be well received. I definitely think I might need this when Im 64!

Please remember to be courteous to YMCA members when we are meeting for our runs. Many times when we meet before or after a run, we have a large group of very chatty runners! Remember that others are using the Y as well, and avoid blocking the hallway or the ramp leading to the exercise room. The exercise room is more crowded now that there are many new pieces of equipment, so please try not to monopolize the limited area available to stretch.

HOW TO RECEIVE A PRC BOSTON MARATHON NUMBER

Traditionally PRC has a lottery for Boston Marathon numbers for club members each year. The BAA gives the club 5 invitational applications.
Club names are deawn from a hat. You have an opportunity to have your name in the hat several times.
Each volunteer event puts your name in the hat. Each club member has a name in for membership in the club.

The club has a list of events that members can volunteer for.

1. YMCA Triathlon 2. Santa Scamper 3. Tufts health Care 10K 4. Chase Corporate Challenge

also by attending 3 of our 6 club meetings

For example, if you volunteer for 2 of the 4 events listed above, and attend 3 meetings your name will go in the hat 4 times (one for membership alone).

USATAF MEMBERSHIP

Just a reminder that PRC encourages all runners to start/renew their USA track and Field memberships. Why is this important? For a number of reasons:

(1) Every year, PRC receives a number of waivers for the Boston marathon. These waivers allow runners who have not yet met their qualifying times to "bypass the system" and get an official race number. The number of waivers PRC receives can be related to the # of PRC folks who are active members in USATF. So if you want to run Boston -- or even if you merely want to help out PRC friends who want to run -- your mentership in USATF is really important'

(2) USATF membership is cheap, comes with cool runner benefits (e.g., a local newletter) and is a great way to support the sport we all love....

How do you join USATF? Simple. Goto USATF New England and scroll down to the bottom and click on Membership Benefits. There is a form you can fill out online. Please note, the PRC club # is 176.
