Good luck to them and everyone else in the PRC, who will be running the Boston Marathon as they begin their training for the big day

HOLIDAY PARTY, DECEMBER 16, 2001

PRC is having a Holiday Party at the Milky Way Lounge & Lanes (403 Centre Street, JP) on Sunday, December 16th @ 6-9pm. This is a very funky place with bowling lanes, pool tables and great pizza. This is the same day as the Santa Scamper, so most of you should be around anyway. Hope you can make it!

The Club will pay for the bowling lanes and subsidize the tax and tip, but each member would be responsible for $16 for food (appetizers, Caesar Salad and an assortment of gourmet pizzas), plus whatever beverages consumed at the cash bar.

Please let me know how many in your party. Then, you can send a check to me at 183 Beech Street, Boston, MA 02131 or leave it at the Y. We need to collect the money up front. I am checking today on the cost for kids - will let people know as they contact me.

If you are interested, please RSVP to Dorothy Giarla or 617-323-3831 - BEFORE NOVEMBER 16.

STUART & ANGELA ROSE HOLIDAY PARTY

We are having a post-holiday party. You are all welcome to stop by for a drink or two anytime after 7pm on Saturday, January 5, 2002. We hope to see you there!

Happy Holidays, Stuart & Angela Rose

Directions
Take Route 128 to the Great Plain Avenue exit. Take a right at the end of the ramp and follow the signs to West Roxbury. Follow that road as it curves to the left (St. Susanna's Church on right) to the intersection of Route 109. Take a left onto Route 109 (Irish Ale House on right). Go through a major intersection onto Spring Street. Spring Street becomes Centre Street. Continue for approximately one mile, and turn left onto Lagrange Street (Blanchard's on the corner). Take the second left onto Westmount Avenue. Our house is #53. Call with any questions (617) 325-3583.

Notes From the President

THANK YOU. On behalf of the PRC Board, I would like to personally extend a thank you to each member of the Club for your enthusiastic willingness to help the Club in our many activities over the past year. There have been numerous times that we have asked for volunteers, particularly over the past couple of months when it sometimes seemed like there was an activity of some sort every weekend. Each time we needed help, the response from the Club has been tremendous. As recently as this past week, when we had hundreds of labels to put on Scamper applications, we had more than enough people come by to help out, and the job was finished before we had time to finish eating Angela and Sarah's brownies! From volunteering at the Chase Corporate Challenge and BAA Half Marathon to eagerly welcoming new runners and encouraging them to become part of the Club, you have helped continue PRC tradition and made this another successful year for the PRC. Thank you for all your efforts.

SANTA SCAMPER. As you know by now, thePRC's Santa Scamper is upon us. It is scheduled for December 16 at 11:00, with a kids race at 10:45. There are extra applications in the PRC mailbox at the Y; please feel free to pick some up and distribute them to people at work or any businesses or health clubs in the area. We are also still looking for raffle prizes. If you know of a local business which would be willing to donate a raffle prize, or if your own place of work would be willing to do so, please contact Angela Rose who is coordinating the raffle prizes. Remember, our race proceeds benefit the Globe Santa Fund, so any donation of a raffle prize will help raise money for a very worthy cause. Also, we need lots of volunteers the day of the race. Keith Shields is coordinating volunteers for the Scamper, so please let him know if you, your family or friends can help us out that day

RESOLUTION RUN. It's hard to believe that it has come around again, but January 1, 2002 is nearly here, and that means it is nearly time for our annual Resolution Run. We will have our annual membership renewal at 9:00, have a short Fun Run of 3 to 5 miles about 9:30, and then have breakfast in the gym at the Y at 10. And of course, during breakfast in the gym, we'll have our annual drawing for Boston Marathon numbers. Please let one of the Board members know whether or not you would like to have your name put into the drawing.

SKI WEEKEND

Hi, Thanks to everyone who replied to my initial email about a PRC ski weekend. By the amount of replies we received there seems to be enough interest in planning it, so with help from Linda Moraski, here are the details

************************************************************************************

The weekend will be March 8-10. The accommodations will be at the Cranmore Mt Lodge. This is the same place that Tom Purcell used for his Mt Wash hike in August of 2000, so any of you that went on that hike will be familiar with it.

Its located in North Conway, right next to Mt Cranmore. Cross country trails are right outside the lodge and downhill skiing can be done at nearby Attitash, Wildcat and Black Mt. Also ice skating can be done at their lighted ice skating pond. The lodge has an outdoor heated pool and Jacuzzi, restaurant and the outlet stores of North Conway are nearby.

The cost per person will be $105 for the weekend. That is based on 2 people sharing a room. The price includes 2 nights lodging (Fri-sat) and 2 breakfasts. Lift tickets for skiing are not included in that price but discount tickets are available.

I will need a firm commitment by anyone who wants to go, by Jan 5. You can either contact me at runwalter1@aol.com or Linda at lmoraski@hotmail.com . Money does not have to be sent at this moment but your reply will obligate you for the $105 even if you have to cancel later, because after Jan 5, I will reserve the amount of rooms we need based on the replies I receive and hold it on a credit card. I will need the money within the following 2 weeks.

You don't need to go skiing to enjoy this weekend. There are so many other things to do in the North Conway area, but the base price for everyone for the weekend will be $105 and depending on what type of skiing you want to do, the price will be a bit higher.

Once I receive the replies from everyone. I will make the reservations and send out the final details with directions to everyone that is going.

You can check out the Cranmore Mt Lodge. Best wishes to everyone for a safe and Happy New Year Walter

Welcome to new members
Tracey Abber,Scott Wittlin, Kara Holmquist & Angela Tragos

Update E-Mail
If your email/home address or phone # changes, Please let me know runwalter1@aol.com so i can keep the club list up to date

Resolution Run & membership renewal
If you are unable to make the Resolution Run on Jan 1 and would like to renew your membership early, you can fill out a membership renewal and leave it in the PRC mailbox at the Y

The PRC holiday party
The PRC holiday party will be held at the Milky Way Lounge & Lanes (403 Centre St, Jamaica Plain)on Sunday Dec 16th from 6-9 pm

Please remember to be courteous to YMCA members when we are meeting for our runs. Many times when we meet before or after a run, we have a large group of very chatty runners! Remember that others are using the Y as well, and avoid blocking the hallway or the ramp leading to the exercise room. The exercise room is more crowded now that there are many new pieces of equipment, so please try not to monopolize the limited area available to stretch.

Not qualified for the Boston Marathon!  Cant get a number or want to run a different marathon then Boston next year

How about the Vancouver Marathon in Vancouver Canada (May 5th, 2002)

We would like to get a group of PRC members together to go out to Vancouver next spring to run the marathon

Vancouver is a very scenic city and the marathon has about 3,000 entries. A few members have already expressed interest, so the more the merrier and with the exchange rate being so good for the American dollar compared to the Canadian dollar, good deals can be had.

HOW TO RECEIVE A PRC BOSTON MARATHON NUMBER

Traditionally PRC has a lottery for Boston Marathon numbers for club members each year. The BAA gives the club 5 invitational applications.
Club names are deawn from a hat. You have an opportunity to have your name in the hat several times.
Each volunteer event puts your name in the hat. Each club member has a name in for membership in the club.

The club has a list of events that members can volunteer for.

1. YMCA Triathlon 2. Santa Scamper 3. Tufts health Care 10K 4. Chase Corporate Challenge

also by attending 3 of our 6 club meetings

For example, if you volunteer for 2 of the 4 events listed above, and attend 3 meetings your name will go in the hat 4 times (one for membership alone).

USATAF MEMBERSHIP

Just a reminder that PRC encourages all runners to start/renew their USA track and Field memberships. Why is this important? For a number of reasons:

(1) Every year, PRC receives a number of waivers for the Boston marathon. These waivers allow runners who have not yet met their qualifying times to "bypass the system" and get an official race number. The number of waivers PRC receives can be related to the # of PRC folks who are active members in USATF. So if you want to run Boston -- or even if you merely want to help out PRC friends who want to run -- your mentership in USATF is really important'

(2) USATF membership is cheap, comes with cool runner benefits (e.g., a local newletter) and is a great way to support the sport we all love....

return to top

How do you join USATF? Simple. Goto USATF New England and scroll down to the bottom and click on Membership Benefits. There is a form you can fill out online. Please note, the PRC club # is 176.
