****** MEMBER NEWS ******
RESOLUTION RUN
It's hard to believe that it has come around again, but January 1, 2003 is nearly here, and that means it is nearly time for our annual Resolution Run. We will have our annual membership renewal at 9:00, a short Fun Run of 3 to 5 miles about 10:00 and then have breakfast in the gym at the Y. And, if they come in on time, we will have our new 2003 Parkway Running Club long sleeve t-shirts for everyone who renews their membership. BOSTON MARATHON NUMBERS. The Club is getting five invitational numbers from the BAA again this year.
As we have done the last few years, we'll have our annual drawing for Boston Marathon numbers during breakfast in the gym. Please let one of the Board members know as soon as possible whether or not you would like to have your name put into the drawing. Thanks, and have a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday everyone. Jim
2002 SANTA SCAMPER
THANKS TO All, Sponsors, Contributors, Organizers, Volunteers and Runners for contributing to one more VERY successful
SANTA SCAMPER. Mother nature was once again generous with a runner friendly weather day. A special thanks to (Organizer) Keith Shields and club officers Jim Sweeney, Erin Dunne, Stuart Rose, Sarah Hull, Dorothy Giarla & Walter Burgess. Thanks to SANTA (Tom P) for taking time from his busy schedule to preside over his race.
I would like to sincerely thank all of you who helped out on the
Scamper this past Sunday, and who helped out with all the planning over the
last few weeks and months. It was truly a group effort to pull off the
race again. Thanks to your time and energy, our Club was able to raise
approximately $2600 to buy toys for kids at Christmas who otherwise
wouldn't be getting anything. You surely have done your good deed for the
season!!
Be sure to check out page B7 of Tuesday's Globe (12/17/02). It has a
picture of the winners, which include Julie Connors and Kara Holmquist's
mom, and, of course, our Santa waving in the back! Tom, you may need to
start eating more cookies and cake and fewer Power Bars so you can keep
your Santa image for the 2003 Scamper!
Don't forget about the Christmas party on Sunday night! See you
there. Jim

The 5th Annual West Roxbury YMCA/Boston EMS Triathlon - Thank-you
The 5th Annual West Roxbury YMCA/Boston EMS Triathlon was a success! We raised over $3100 for the YMCA Reachout Campaign. This year even more people stepped up to help out, Steve and I can?t thank you enough! Special thanks to Erin,Cindy,Jim Sweeney,Jon Connors,John Donnelly for your help with applications, volunteers, setup, route safety and much, much more.
This event as you know is very involved due to the length of the event and the miles it covers?.the volunteers have to stay on the course for a long time.
Every year we hear good/bad feedback and try to improve as we go along. We received many compliments on our volunteers..how helpful they were giving directions and cheering on the athletes! We welcome your comments and thank-you very much for your help and support.
The event brings many people together, the YMCA staff, the PRC, the athletes and their families who come to cheer them on. It is a great sport to check out if you are looking for a little variety to your running?.. Couldn't have done it without the Parkway Running Club, thank-you.
We wish you and your families a very Happy and Healthy Holiday Season! Francine and Steve

SKI WEEKEND
Now that winter is almost officially here and with the snow falling outside today, it is time to think about winter sports like skiing and snow shoeing
I have had a few inquiries about putting together another PRC ski weekend like we had last year, so I am sending out this announcemwnt to see who is interested.
I have contacted the Cranmore Mt Lodge, the same place we stayed at last year. The lodge is right in North Conway in the Mt Washington Valley and next to Cranmore Mt and a short drive to Attitash. They are booked up for Jan and Feb, but the week of March 7-9 is available. That is the best week because it is after the Martha's Vineyard weekend, and before the New Bedford 1/2 marathon, and March should be a bit warmer and more enjoyable skiing
He recommended I get back to him on how many are coming as soon as possible. They have various type rooms with queen, double and bunk beds, as all of you who went last year know, so once I know how many would like to go, I can call them back and make all the room arrangements
The price of the rooms are $110 per person for the 2 nights. I could also make reservations at the Appalachian club for dinner on Saturday night like we did last year if people are interested. The price last year was $10
Please let me know by next Monday (DEC 23) if anyone is interested and I can then book the rooms. I know this is early, but with winter now upon us and ski areas open, reservations have to be made soon to guarantee a weekend for a large group. Last year we had 17 PRC members go on the ski weekend. I will be booking them on my credit card, so if you tell me you want to go, that will have to financially commit you to it
It was a fun time last year and hope there is enough interest to do it again. Just let me know by next Monday.
Thanks
Walter

BOSTON MARATHON Qualifying Times
"We are different, in essence, from other men. If you want to win something, run 100 meters. If you want to experience something, run a marathon."
--Emil Zatopek
return to top
Two quick things here. First, those of you who are 45+ (or
planning to get there soon enough) or 55+, the BAA have an
extra-special gift. 5 and 10 minutes, respectively, added to
you BAA qualifying times for 2003! And 4 hours for the 60 yo
crowd. Just as an example, that means a 3:45 for John Govoni
and 4:15 for Dorothy. Definitely something attainable! And did
you run an almost fast enough time at Bay State in Oct 2001?
You might have just retroactively qualified.
With the BAA crowd getting larger each year and times getting
slower everywhere, I don't agree with watering down the Boston
Marathon even more than it already is. But I guess this is the
new reality. The chip times are probably making this easier and
the proper seeding means faster runners shouldn't be bothered so
much. Wonder if they are throwing out the supposed
15,000-runner limit?
This means that in 2004 I'll only need a 3:30 instead of a 3:25.
But I'm one of those guys who'd rather have the challenge of
needing a 3:25 instead of a 3:30. It means more that way. I'm
interested in hearing opinions of others and I'm guessing this
will be well received. I definitely think I might need this
when Im 64!

Please remember to be courteous to YMCA members when we are meeting for our runs. Many times when we meet before or after a run, we have a large group of very chatty runners! Remember that others are using the Y as well, and avoid blocking the hallway or the ramp leading to the exercise room. The exercise room is more crowded now that there are many new pieces of equipment, so please try not to monopolize the limited area available to stretch.

HOW TO RECEIVE A PRC BOSTON MARATHON NUMBER
Traditionally PRC has a lottery for Boston Marathon numbers for club members each year.
The BAA gives the club 5 invitational applications.
Club names are deawn from a hat. You have an opportunity to have your name in the hat several times.
Each volunteer event puts your name in the hat. Each club member has a name in for membership in the club.
The club has a list of events that members can volunteer for.
1. YMCA Triathlon
2. Santa Scamper
3. Tufts health Care 10K
4. Chase Corporate Challenge
also by attending 3 of our 6 club meetings
For example, if you volunteer for 2 of the 4 events listed above, and attend 3 meetings your
name will go in the hat 4 times (one for membership alone).

USATAF MEMBERSHIP
Just a reminder that PRC encourages all runners to start/renew their USA track and Field memberships. Why is this important? For a number of reasons:
(1) Every year, PRC receives a number of waivers for the Boston marathon. These waivers allow runners who have not yet met their qualifying times to "bypass the system" and get an official race number. The number of waivers PRC receives can be related to the # of PRC folks who are active members in USATF. So if you want to run Boston -- or even if you merely want to help out PRC friends who want to run -- your mentership in USATF is really important'
(2) USATF membership is cheap, comes with cool runner benefits (e.g., a local newletter) and is a great way to support the sport we all love....
How do you join USATF? Simple. Goto USATF New England and scroll down to the bottom and click on Membership Benefits. There is a form you can fill out online. Please note, the PRC club # is 176.
