If you were unable to make the Resolution Run on Jan 1 and would like to renew your
membership early, you can fill out a
membership renewal and leave it in the PRC mailbox at the Y
Please see Jim Swenney if you have renewed and not received a PRC singlet.
** As always, please remember to be courteous to other Y members when we meet for our runs. The Y gets quite busy this time of year, and be sure to keep theexercise room ramp and corridor open. Enjoy the winter running and be sure to watch out when the roads are dark and slippery! Jim
BOSTON MARATHON
"We are different, in essence, from other men. If you want to win something, run 100 meters. If you want to experience something, run a marathon."

Hi,
The
following marathon info is from Jim Sweeney and will also be included in the
newsletter that is being mailed out this week
BOSTON MARATHON
It's Boston Marathon time again. Rather than having to trudge through the
miles in the snow, ice and cold, this year we had a very running -
friendly winter. Let's hope the good weather holds for marathon day
itself. Those of us who are running are very grateful for the daily
encouragement and advice which everyone else in the Club has given us. We
are particularly grateful for the support many of you have given us on our two
"course runs," driving us out to Hopkinton early on a chilly Saturday morning,
having, water, Gatorade, bananas, "GU," and large doses of encouragement for us
while we run, telling us we are looking good no matter how tired and sweaty we
really look, and having bagels, cookies and a warm car for us when we finish. We
could not have done it without you, so thanks very much! Thanks to Tom,
Dorothy, Ruben, Jean, Nellie, Walter, Kay, Julie O and Jim Lalonde.
Marathon weekend activities
The Runner's Expo is on
Saturday and Sunday, if you are interested, we can
carpool or take the train
or the T in together. Our pre-marathon pasta dinner will be again be at
Vinny Testa's in Brookline at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 13. Everyone,
including family and friends, is welcome, whether or not you running this
year.
Bus Info
return to top
The bus to drive us
to Hopkinton will be at the Y at 7:30 on marathon day. Please try to be
there by 7:30 so we can board and get on the road. All the busses have to
be into Hopkinton before 9:00. The cost of the bus is $20 for members and
$25 for non-members. Everyone riding on the bus has to be an official
entrant, no unofficial runners are allowed by BAA rules. We do have room
for non-members, so please feel free to mention it to any friends who are
looking for a ride out to Hopkinton.
Hotel Room
We
also have reserved a room at the Back Bay Sheraton for race day. If you
bring a bag to the bus in the morning, we'll have someone bring it into the
Sheraton. We'll have snacks and a hot shower there. The charge for
those who want to use the Sheraton is $20.00 per person.
Post
race party
Due to some problems with booking the Dogwood, we have changed the location
of the post-marathon party. Dorothy Giarla and John Govoni have graciously
offered to host the party at their home, 183 Beech Street in Roslindale. We
will have food and drinks, and plenty of chairs for those who can no longer stay
on their feet, so bring your appetites and sore legs. Everyone is welcome,
including friends and family. It will be from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on April
15, marathon day. We will still ask for a $5.00 donation to help defray the
costs of the food and drinks, and the Club will subsidize the remaining cost.
Please let John or Dorothy know if you plan on coming 617-323-3831 or giarla@rascal.med.harvard.edu
so they can plan the food and drinks.
Many
thanks to John and Dorothy.
Good luck to all of those who are running in
the Boston Marathon this year, and particularly to those who are running it for
the first time. Enjoy the experience!

BAA Marathon teams registered
In the interest of getting a little extra exposure for the
running club, as well as another reason to run the marathon,
I've entered PRC teams in the Team Competition for the Boston
Marathon.
There should be no pressure involved here. Just a chance for
the club to get listed in the team results if at least three
runners finish in any of the categories. If anyone listed below
wants to opt out, send me an email by 10pm Monday night and I'll
remove you from the team. I just did this over the weekend and
registration closes Monday. The registration process just
involved individually selecting runners from the BAA site and
adding them to the right team.
The first three finishes on each team have their overall time
(not chip time) added together. The real challenge is to get
three finishers from one team, not to get fast finishers. We're
in good shape in that category.
If there is a 3rd Woman Master in PRC out there who is running
the marathon, I can create a fourth team for that category.
Please let me know if I missed that person.
Masters can compete on the Open Team so if someone thinks we
should move a fast male master up to Open, let me know.
Men's Open Team
1 Burgess, Walter D. Jr. (13809)
2 Grant, William T. (13955)

Millenium Park Race Series
Date: Tuesday May 7, 14, 21 2002 Time: 6:30pm
Location: Millenium Park (West Roxbury)
The race series will be a 2.5 mile and a 400 meter for youth/adult and will be wheel measured, with a slight course change from Nov. 2001 series. It will be a low-key approach again with some water and maybe a snack or two at the end. I will be "getting the word out" through coolrunning, ne-runner, local paper's, and flyer's. It's all about fun and fittness in a nice traffic free park.

4Th Annual West Roxbury YMCA/Boston EMS Triathlon
DATE: September 29, 2002
TIME: 7:00AM
PLACE: West Roxbury YMCA
Triathlon
Hard to believe but it is time again to start planning this wonderful event!
Thanks to everyone who helpled out last year in volunteering, running errands, and participating! This years event will be held on Sunday September 29th at 7:00am. You'll see flyers and apps around the YMCA. Please feel free to make copies and hand out to friends or bring to an evant you may be doing! As the event gets closer I will be taking volunteer information. Rumor has it that many PRC folks have the triathlon Bug... good luck in your training and I hope to be one with you.
Any ideas to help improve the event are welcome.
Stay healthy and best wishes for a wonderful TRI season! I miss you!!
Francine.Francine
Francine Ronan started her 2002 racing season with a 5K on saturday march 16th. She completed the event in 25:40, her coach Sean Francis Ronan was pleased with his mom's (Sorry his athlete's
first run of the season). It was the St. Paddy's day 5K in Smithtown, Long Island.
It was a big weekend for the Ronans as they had a visit from the president and the Director of Social activities for the PRC James Sweeney and John Donnelly respectively. Both of them were seen huddleing in a corner with Sean Francis, no doubt discuissing Francine's future racing plans.

If your email/home address or phone # changes, Please let me know runwalter1@aol.com
so I can keep the club list up to date

Please remember to be courteous to YMCA members when we are meeting for our runs. Many times when we meet before or after a run, we have a large group of very chatty runners! Remember that others are using the Y as well, and avoid blocking the hallway or the ramp leading to the exercise room. The exercise room is more crowded now that there are many new pieces of equipment, so please try not to monopolize the limited area available to stretch.

VANCOUVER MARATHON 2001
Good Luck to John Govoni, Dorothy Giarla, Julie Connors and walter Burgess who will be running the Vancouver Marathon.
Not qualified for the Boston Marathon! Cant get a number or want to run a different marathon then Boston next year
How about the Vancouver Marathon in Vancouver Canada (May 5th, 2002)
We would like to get a group of PRC members together to go out to Vancouver next spring to run the marathon
Vancouver is a very scenic city and the marathon has about 3,000 entries. A few members have already expressed interest, so the more the merrier and with the exchange rate being so good for the American dollar compared to the Canadian dollar, good deals can be had.

HOW TO RECEIVE A PRC BOSTON MARATHON NUMBER
Traditionally PRC has a lottery for Boston Marathon numbers for club members each year.
The BAA gives the club 5 invitational applications.
Club names are deawn from a hat. You have an opportunity to have your name in the hat several times.
Each volunteer event puts your name in the hat. Each club member has a name in for membership in the club.
The club has a list of events that members can volunteer for.
1. YMCA Triathlon
2. Santa Scamper
3. Tufts health Care 10K
4. Chase Corporate Challenge
also by attending 3 of our 6 club meetings
For example, if you volunteer for 2 of the 4 events listed above, and attend 3 meetings your
name will go in the hat 4 times (one for membership alone).

USATAF MEMBERSHIP
Just a reminder that PRC encourages all runners to start/renew their USA track and Field memberships. Why is this important? For a number of reasons:
(1) Every year, PRC receives a number of waivers for the Boston marathon. These waivers allow runners who have not yet met their qualifying times to "bypass the system" and get an official race number. The number of waivers PRC receives can be related to the # of PRC folks who are active members in USATF. So if you want to run Boston -- or even if you merely want to help out PRC friends who want to run -- your mentership in USATF is really important'
(2) USATF membership is cheap, comes with cool runner benefits (e.g., a local newletter) and is a great way to support the sport we all love....
return to top
How do you join USATF? Simple. Goto USATF New England and scroll down to the bottom and click on Membership Benefits. There is a form you can fill out online. Please note, the PRC club # is 176.
