BOSTON MARATHON Qualifying Times

"We are different, in essence, from other men. If you want to win something, run 100 meters. If you want to experience something, run a marathon."

Two quick things here. First, those of you who are 45+ (or planning to get there soon enough) or 55+, the BAA have an extra-special gift. 5 and 10 minutes, respectively, added to you BAA qualifying times for 2003! And 4 hours for the 60 yo crowd. Just as an example, that means a 3:45 for John Govoni and 4:15 for Dorothy. Definitely something attainable! And did you run an almost fast enough time at Bay State in Oct 2001? You might have just retroactively qualified.

With the BAA crowd getting larger each year and times getting slower everywhere, I don't agree with watering down the Boston Marathon even more than it already is. But I guess this is the new reality. The chip times are probably making this easier and the proper seeding means faster runners shouldn't be bothered so much. Wonder if they are throwing out the supposed 15,000-runner limit?

This means that in 2004 I'll only need a 3:30 instead of a 3:25. But I'm one of those guys who'd rather have the challenge of needing a 3:25 instead of a 3:30. It means more that way. I'm interested in hearing opinions of others and I'm guessing this will be well received. I definitely think I might need this when Im 64!

return to top

Please remember to be courteous to YMCA members when we are meeting for our runs. Many times when we meet before or after a run, we have a large group of very chatty runners! Remember that others are using the Y as well, and avoid blocking the hallway or the ramp leading to the exercise room. The exercise room is more crowded now that there are many new pieces of equipment, so please try not to monopolize the limited area available to stretch.

Millennium Park Race Series revisited....
by Chris Hussey

May 7th, 2002 6:30pm... mild, breezy 60's Race #1 of 3... The first late spring run of the mini-series nestled between the Boston Marathon and Memorial Day had 15 total participants with a win overall by the ever consistent Brian Savage in 15:00, followed by Doug Goldblatt 15:21, Kenneth Klau 15:41, Pioccone 16:53, Jim Sweeney 17:05,John Donnelly 17:35, Jon Connor 19:06, McDonough 22:17..Brian has now won 4 in a row (3 fall 2001) and his best time on the wheel measured course. A streak was well on the way for him with Doug and Kenneth keeping the pressure on.

On the Woman's side, the race organizer finally nagged his bride to run it and she pulled off a win in 17:32 followed by Rachel MacGregor for second in 23:06, couldn't get my sister to run it to round out a top three she had her hands with her two Cherubs at the finish area.

May 14th, T-Storms, high winds, some small hail. #2 of 3.. There was a pause in the storm for 40-50 minutes just in time for the runners to tour the park and establish oxygen debt.

Julie Hussey made it two in a row with a 17:14, 18 sec. faster than race #1. Taking second place and returning to form was Diane Sagnella-Protasi in a strong 18:06, followed by Beth Delahunty in 19:04.

Brian Savage sprinted to the finish in 15:12 with a closing Ken Klau 15:18 leaving no margin of ever for the streak driven Master.John Pioccone (my Brother in-law) matched his time from last week (16:53) with Jim Sweeney closing in at 16:57, 6 secs faster than previous week under very windy conditions. Horgan (17:09), Donnelly

43rd MOUNT WASHINGTON Road Race 7.6mi. June 15,2002 Gorham, NH.
by Chris Hussey

I know what I want for Father's Day each year! It's simple. When March rolls around I have my sight on the Mount Washington RR lottery. We make it a fun family weekend for the boy's from camp Hussey covering Story Land, Train Museum's,hike around Attitash, you get the picture.

Attitash resort is our base camp and favorite place to stay to help keep everyone abundantly entertained. A damp cool weekend did not stop our fun! it's really icing on the cake to have the race on Saturday morning and fun and games on Friday and Sunday. Now onto the race!

The 2000 applications result in about 1000 runners so, odds are not bad considering 4 out of the past 5 years I have obtained a number. This year was history making for the very well organized, extreme race. You remember our very wet spring? There was lots of snow on the top of the "rock pile" but, not a big deal. In 1997, I think it was about 75 degrees at the start with fog and deep snow drifts on certain sections approaching the top.

At 8:45am, my routine of connecting with a car-pool down resulted in a response from race officials that "they are not allowing vehicles up". My response was "cool, I'll try running down all the way" ( I have done 2.5-3.0 miles post race. Ouch!). As time went on the dreaded news was announced. The Auto-Road was closed to vehicles and the race will be stopped half-way.

The disappointment on the faces of nearly all reflected my own emotion at the time. Can you imagine a sink-hole at Comm. Ave. and Centre Street in Newton on Patriots Day? Sorry, the Marathon is finishing at the 20 mile mark. They left out one of the best and most difficult parts of the course that makes Boston what it is. Well, maybe I am comparing apples and oranges but, it just starts to get adventurous as the trees grow small and the wind blows big at that point in the race. The soft rain in the valley was a cold sleet and freezing conditions at the summit at the 10 am start. Steady winds 40-45mph with gusts in the 60's left the windchill around 13 degrees. Summit observers noted that they skated out on deck to get the precipitation cans. It was a good call by the Auto Road managers.

In it's 43rd year we were racing to the 3.8 mile point where the finishing clock was et-up and walking/running back down. The cannon went off and it was a bit of a sprint as my pace was about a minute per mile faster than the full distance which I paid for along the way having to stop 3 times briefly to bring myheart rate down. It was very hard to hold-on each mile. There is a section during the race between 2.5 and 3.5 miles that is about a 15-18% grade that really tests you. Nearing the finish I just kept moving and pushing hard and I must say, I was glad it finished. At 30 degrees, rain and wind I was quick to begin the run down. The time was ok (36:13 63rd overall/11th age group) I am always looking for more in the time & place area. but I gave it all I had. Maybe next year I'll try to run my goal of sub-1:20. You should really give a try in 2003.

cheers,

ChrisHussey

HOW TO RECEIVE A PRC BOSTON MARATHON NUMBER

Traditionally PRC has a lottery for Boston Marathon numbers for club members each year. The BAA gives the club 5 invitational applications.
Club names are deawn from a hat. You have an opportunity to have your name in the hat several times.
Each volunteer event puts your name in the hat. Each club member has a name in for membership in the club.

The club has a list of events that members can volunteer for.

1. YMCA Triathlon 2. Santa Scamper 3. Tufts health Care 10K 4. Chase Corporate Challenge

also by attending 3 of our 6 club meetings

For example, if you volunteer for 2 of the 4 events listed above, and attend 3 meetings your name will go in the hat 4 times (one for membership alone).

USATAF MEMBERSHIP

Just a reminder that PRC encourages all runners to start/renew their USA track and Field memberships. Why is this important? For a number of reasons:

(1) Every year, PRC receives a number of waivers for the Boston marathon. These waivers allow runners who have not yet met their qualifying times to "bypass the system" and get an official race number. The number of waivers PRC receives can be related to the # of PRC folks who are active members in USATF. So if you want to run Boston -- or even if you merely want to help out PRC friends who want to run -- your mentership in USATF is really important'

(2) USATF membership is cheap, comes with cool runner benefits (e.g., a local newletter) and is a great way to support the sport we all love....

return to top

How do you join USATF? Simple. Goto USATF New England and scroll down to the bottom and click on Membership Benefits. There is a form you can fill out online. Please note, the PRC club # is 176.
