WALTER’S RUN

(formerly the Santa Scamper)

December 19, 2004

11 a.m.

West Roxbury YMCA

Volunteers will be needed for both race day and pre-race day preparation. More information to follow (Keith will again be organizing volunteers). In addition, since police detail costs have increased this year, we are looking for additional sponsors for the race. We need your help in soliciting sponsors, by actually making the contact and getting a commitment. Sponsor amounts should be at least $100. Sponsors at this amount and above will be listed in the race application. To be listed this year, we need sponsor commitment by September 1. Anyone who knows of a potential sponsor, please contact Julie Connors (julcon2@aol.com).

Contributions in the form of gift certificates or products will also be greatly appreciated and will be used for the raffle. Carol Hani (Hani@mail.hrca.harvard.edu) is in charge of the raffle.

The Walter Burgess Scholarship Recipients

The PRC scholarship in Walter’s name has been quite successful this year, both in amassing funds and in supporting a number of deserving young runners by sending them to the Newport Running Camp.  Thank you for making this possible!  This years recipients are:

1.  Cedar Crest College coaches, Val and Dan Donohue, recommended Katie Brown. Katie strives at all times to put maximum effort into any task she is given. She was awarded Second Team All-Conference honors last fall. She competes annually in the Women's 5K Classic, a women-only breast cancer walk/run benefit which is the largest event of its kind in Pennsylvania. Last year, she finished 20th out of 884 runners, and 4th in her age group.

Katie is a junior majoring in Chemistry with a concentration in Forensics and a minor in Biology.  She is also a leader within her community. In addition to her role as the captain of the cross-country team, she is incredibly active on campus and also with Habitat for Humanity.

Katie Brown was unable to earn money this summer because she's taking a full-time unpaid internship. She knew immediately that she would not be able to attend camp, which was especially disappointing to her since she attended last year and really got a lot out of it.  However, because of Walter's scholarship, Katie is excited to be a part of camp and partake of its benefits.

2. Coach Ken Pelletier recommended Christine Andrade, who will be a Gardner Mass. high school senior in September. Christine has been running cross-country, indoor, and outdoor track for 3 years. She had attended the Newport Running Camp the summer after her freshman year and loved it. She was unable to attend last summer, and without the Walter Burgess Scholarship, she would not have been able to attend this year. Christine is looking forward to this camp experience because she feels it "is full of people who could make her a top athlete". She loves the experience of running, but also the experience of making friends with other runners - all of which she will get at the Newport Running Camp.

3.  Tyler (10 years old) and Brandon (13 years old) Burgess are brothers and also are Walter's nephews. They would not have been able to attend the Newport Running Camp without this scholarship. Tyler got  interested in running just before Walter died.  Walter and Tyler actually ran together once or twice. Both boys were very close to Walter and still miss him very much. Walter inspired their interest in running.

In April, their mother will be getting married to Kent Vinson, who has also taken up running since Walter passed away. Kent ran the 2004 Boston Marathon in Walter's honor and expects to do it again in April. With the help of the Newport Running Camp, the boys will continue Walter's running dreams and could one day be doing the Boston Marathon themselves.

All of these recipients really appreciate the opportunity to attend the Newport Running Camp in Walter's name!  Walter would be honored and amazed that so many people cared enough to contribute to his scholarship. There is no doubt he would be pleased that others could share and develop his and their love of running.

How to Apply:

Criteria for Running Scholarship Applications

·               a short note from the student demonstrating interest in running and participating in the camp

·               a solid academic record

·               facts about his/her running career (meaning interest, and love of the sport, not necessarily the

·               best and fastest)

·               financial need

·               community service

Applications can be directed to Dorothy Giarla  and donations can be made out to PRC/Walter Burgess Scholarship Fund and sent to Julie O'Connor, the fund administrator (applications and donations can be sent to Dorothy or Julie at:  Parkway Running Club, c/o the West Roxbury YMCA, 15 Bellevue Street, West Roxbury, MA  02132).  All donations are greatly appreciated!

Eat n' Runs

A very special thank you to Keith Shields and Karen May for each hosting a spectacular summertime Eat n' Run. Keith had the PRC up to his lakeside cottage in
New Hampshire for a day, Karen had the PRC to her parent's ocean-front home in Marshfield. Both Keith and Karen went above and beyond in hosting the Club for the better part of a day at their homes. We were able to swim, boat, soak in the sun (with appropriate skin protection, of course) and even water-ski on the lake. They both put a lot of time, effort and resources into hosting the Club, going above and beyond brunch and including afternoon cookouts as well. The weather cooperated, and a good time was had by all. We really appreciate your efforts, Karen and Keith, and the hospitality of your families and friends as well. Jim

FROM JIM LALONDE

Greetings from PRC-West

We are almost settled in to our house and finally have internet access again, so I thought that I would pass on our new address and telephone information.  We have found a house to rent close to my new job.

Our house is relatively rural for this part of the country, although it is only a few miles from Stanford

University and Palo Alto center.  It is on 2.5 acres, but most of that is a big hill with a steep slope.

There are 5 bedrooms with plenty of room for visitors so we're hoping that a Parkway contingent will want to run a race out here sometime soon. We'd love to have you.

I'm amazed at the number of runners and cyclists out here.  The weather is perfect for running; in the 50's in the morning, dry and upper 70's in the afternoon. I no longer have the weather excuse (although I seem to enjoy the snowy long runs the best).  We had our first cloudy day since we've been here yesterday and people were complaining that it was like winter.

We really miss Boston and all of our friends so please keep in touch,

Jim

BAA HALF MARATHON VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Save the date - Sunday, October 10. Once again, the PRC will be hosting a water table along the route. If you aren't running, here is your opportunity to get a BAA Half Marathon long sleeve t-shirt (at least that is what they have given the volunteers previous years). Since this is a BAA event, and it is the BAA that gives us invitational numbers to the Boston marathon, it is important for us to help them out in this race, the BAA's other premier event. We need 15-20 volunteers, so if you are not running this year, please try to help us out. We will send out details on the exact time (the race starts at
8:00 a.m.) and place when the time gets closer. Thanks as always for pitching in and helping out. Jim

Message from Eavan -

NORTHWEST FLORIDA HELLO

Greetings from the Redneck Riviera...also known as the Emerald Coast or Forgotten Coast. We have been here close to a month now and are settling in. I have to say, with the exception of missing my great group of PRC friends and of course, my family in Boston, life ain't bad here....the pace is relaxed, people are friendly, and we are lucky to have some of the most beautiful beaches in the USA, think Caribbean green waters...they are truly beautiful. In addition, the weather is not as hot as Southern Florida so this Irish skin is making out ok! Robbie and I are spending the Summer swimming and relaxing while dad is hard at work....I am planning a Fall return-to-work mission and am pursuing anything that sounds interesting but offers up flexible hours and minimal stress!

I have joined the Northwest Florida Track Club which trains about 4-5 days a week here. Their schedule reads interesting, Monday: Run 4-5 miles, social hour afterwards at McGuires Pub, Wednesday: Run 4-5 miles, dinner afterwards at Fudruckers on the island....etc. etc. I haven't made it to the Monday night runs yet but I hear that McGuires sponsors all of the beer and dinner for the club, with the only requirement being that you tip the waitress well. Right now, the club is in planning mode for some upcoming January marathons, the 1st West Palm Beach marathon, the Pensacola marathon and the Disney marathon...I will stay true to my support roots and cheer from the sidelines. I am interested though to hear of any future PRC marathon plans...if the temptation is strong enough, I may just succumb and run another one some day.

Anyway, that is it from here....keep running and hope to see some of you in Lake Winnie in September.

Take Care, Eavan

THANKS, PRC!!

A very big THANK YOU to everyone who donated to my Pan Mass Challenge bike ride on Aug. 7th for the Jimmy Fund.   Ribbons attached to my bike jersey will bear the names of those for whom this year's ride is dedicated.  I am very grateful for your support!
